Best Of American Lit.

Thinking back on the year, I have learned and understood quite a bit. I was best at writing the journals and putting my own thoughts into words. I learned all about postmodernism and I understand all the elements it is composed of. I learned how to present my thoughts and projects in different medias. Lastly, I was able to broaden the way I think about things, by reading other people's blogs and collaborating with the other students in my class.

Derby Reportage

One article talks about how Diane Crump became the first woman jockey. The tone is uplifting and encourages people to fight for what they want in life. Diane race against men and came in 15th out of 17 spots. Even when Diane finished racing, she bred horses to keep up with her passion. The second article's focus is less on the actual race itself, since Thompson and Steadman could not actually see the race from their standpoint, and more on the celebration that surrounds the event. Thompson provides up-close views of life in the Derby infield as well as the grandstand, and a running commentary on the drunkenness of the crowd, which he states in narration as the only thing he was focusing on with the work. The narrative ends in a bittersweet way, for after several days of immersing themselves in partying and drunkeness to get a sense of the event, the guys realize they're exactly the type of people they originally planned to imitate.

Johnny Cyberpunk

You are able to tell this story by William Gibsons is cyberpunk or gonzo journalism because of the sci fi exaggerations and so on. Johnny Mnemonic is a data trafficker who has undergone cybernetic surgery to have a data storage system implanted in his head. Johnny is rescued by Molly, a "Razorgirl" who has undergone extensive body modifications, most notably fingernail blades. When Lewis tries to attack her, she cuts his wrist tendons and takes the incapacitating device control from him. cuts Ralfi to pieces with a razor-sharp monomolecular wire hidden in a prosthetic thumb. Johnny fires his shotgun at the assassin but misses due to the man's enhanced reflexes cybernetically enhanced dolphin retired from navy service. The story’s central theme is that superior technology does not defeat one’s enemy; what is needed is the best use of the technology one chooses.

My Slaughterhouse

Breaking the fourth wall, having no chronological order, using irony, playfulness, and black humor are all elements of postmodernism. These elements all come together in the novel "Slaughterhouse Five," by Kurt Vonegut. Including many examples, the novel exemplifies postmodernism with the help of temporal distortion, metafiction and several other characteristics.

This Is Absurd

The word absurd means wildly unreasonable, illogical, or inappropriate. Something in my life that is absurd, is trying to do homework past 9 at night. My brain gets really tired and all I want to do is go to bed. My homework usually turns out really bad and nothing seems to make sense.

On the essay in class today, I felt that I did very well. I decided to shorten from 5 to 4 paragraphs, but it isn't about the quantity but the quality. If I didn't read the book, I would have not known who or what to write about. Overall, I was happy with what I wrote and I completely improved from the first time I wrote it.

My Modern Moment

My writing in this modern moment is different then it would have been five years ago, because times have changed over the years. People have become more self-reliant and the way we express ourselves change how people in general write. I write things based off of what I have learned throughout the world in this generation. The way people talk, the different expressions people use and what they mean may be different now then what it was five years ago.

My Modernist

The author I would choose to study would be George Bernard Shaw. Shaw was born in Dublin, Ireland and I have always wanted to go to Ireland. He had a troubled childhood which usually brings out the best writing from people. Lastly, he was a freethinker and a supporter of women rights and as a girl myself, I appreciate his support. This decision was easy and I am confident I made the right choice.

The First Seven Years

The end of this story completely shocked me. The whole reason the worker stayed in his house for weeks, was because he loved his boss's daughter. Although the shoemaker was trying to get his daughter involved with the school boy, a different man had his eyes on her. I wonder what his daughter thinks about all of this.

I Am Here

So far my progress in this class has been good. I am getting all of my assignments done and I have been listening in class and I know what I am talking about. My smart goal was to make a goal and I am somewhat getting closer to achieving it. I know I want to go to college, so my goal is to get scholarships and good grades. I will keep up the good work and never give up on this class. I am here!

In Mildred's Parlor

The stage is set in Montag's house with Mildred, Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles. The room was blazing hot, he was all coldness, they sat in the middle of an empty desert with three chairs and him standing, swaying, and him waiting for Mrs. Phelps to stop straightening her dress hem and Mrs. Bowles to take her fingers away from her hair. Then he began to read in a low, stumbling voice that grew firmer as he progressed from line to line, and his voice went out across the desert, into the whiteness, and around the three sitting women there in the great hot emptiness.

"The tree that gauges everything.
A tree stands, lone and tall,
Only frequently accompanied by the wind,
The leaves are no good for eating,
And the branches much too weak for nesting.

Each gust of unwelcome wind,
Strips branches,
Tears leaves,
They fall to the ground only to die,
Only to be left alone.

And although new leaves,
New branches are grown,
Those that were lost,
Can never be replaced."

To Modern or Post Modern

This quote is saying that fiction does not help in depressing times. When David Foster Wallace says, "You burn with hunger for food that does not exist", he is explaining that fiction give people a false idea of hope or happiness. Fiction may act as an escape to somewhere better, but it isn't always.

The Peeved Pedestrian

I think that  Ray Bradbury wrote the novel I am reading to inform society, how sometimes we can get so sucked up in our own world that we forget how to live and open up our eyes. Bradbury uses a lot of indirect characterization, for example when he talks about Beatty entering a room and taking complete control of everyone. By this alone, you can tell that Beatty is well respected and somewhat feared to other people.

1) Guy Montag is the protagonist of the story

2) Firefighters burn down houses who have books in them.

3) Clarisse makes more observations than other people.

4) The story is about how T.V. effects people and reading.

5) Guy Montag hides books so he doesn't get caught.

Theme For English 3

I am usually always the person my teachers think I am. I am very easily able to find my real self as I pursue knowledge and find my place in the world. I just have to make sure I am who I want to be and then I take it from there. I like to make my talents known to my family and keep school separate. If school was supposed to be a place where everyone would have their own private talents known to everyone, I think we would all be home-schooled. Anyone is able to take ownership of their learnig process and demonstrate what they know.

Spring Post: Music As Literature

In my opinion, we can absolutely consider music to be literature. We define literature by books and written peices of work that have a story line and plot, but there is much more to it. Literature is a form of art and can be expressed in many different ways than we give it credit for. Is there a difference between a novel, a poem, a rap, a song, and opera, and a symphony? When you look at the overall idea of these things, you will see that they all have passion and a reason. Everything seems to have a connection to something else, so in a sense it is a small world after all.
