Nick Carraway is a huge character in "The Great Gatsby" and functions in various ways. Nick is always there as a person to vent to and talk things through to. He helps give us a tour through Gatsby's world by being involved with all of the characters around him. As Nick goes through the days, he becomes closer with Daisy and Gatsby and is able to explain how they are acting and he gives us a sense of things to come. His presence helps the plot to thicken when he adds his opinion or just stands back to watch everything unfold before him. Nick helps the readers to imagine being in his place and being able to see everything he sees first hand. Carraway accomplishes life lessons and creates an open mind for himself. The book would be completely different if the narration was provided by an anonymous voice. Without Nick being the narrator, we would not have the inside scoup of everyones actions and thoughts. Gatsby opens up to Nick because they build a relationship together and without Nick, we have no back story. The friendships that Nick makes are important to how the story came to be and having a random, outside person telling it doesn't make sense. Nick is really the whole backbone to the book and without him, we would not know the whole story as it should be told. Nick completes the book and ties everyone together as it is to be and no one could have told it better.
