In the first chapter of Slaughterhouse Five the author talks about the craft of writing while he was actually writing. He went to get information for his book from his friend, Bernard V. O' Hare, from the war. Bernard's wife Mary was rude to him the whole time he was talking to Bernard, by making noises in the kitchen. It turns out that Mary hates war and says that all of the men fighting in wars are just babies to someone. The author understood her and said he would call the book he is writing "The Children's Crusade". Bernard and him couldn't think of much from the war, so they stopped talking about it altogether. The other told his sons not to have anything to do with massacres whatsoever. In a hotel room, the author read the Gideon Bible about Lot's wife turning into a pillar of salt. He said that he likes that it happen, because it shows that she is human. I think it is foreshadowing for things to come.
The phrase schlachthof eins means one slaughterhouse.
