Derby Reportage

One article talks about how Diane Crump became the first woman jockey. The tone is uplifting and encourages people to fight for what they want in life. Diane race against men and came in 15th out of 17 spots. Even when Diane finished racing, she bred horses to keep up with her passion. The second article's focus is less on the actual race itself, since Thompson and Steadman could not actually see the race from their standpoint, and more on the celebration that surrounds the event. Thompson provides up-close views of life in the Derby infield as well as the grandstand, and a running commentary on the drunkenness of the crowd, which he states in narration as the only thing he was focusing on with the work. The narrative ends in a bittersweet way, for after several days of immersing themselves in partying and drunkeness to get a sense of the event, the guys realize they're exactly the type of people they originally planned to imitate.
