Guy Montag is a fireman who is always burning books. In Montag’s world, firemen start fires rather than putting them out. The people in this society watch excessive amounts of television on wall-size sets, and listen to the radio on “Seashell Radio” sets attached to their ears. Montag meets a seventeen year old girl named Clarisse McClellan, who opens his eyes to a new was of looking at life with her unusual love of
people and nature. Montag's wife is a mess and an old woman shocks him by choosing to be burned alive along with her books rather then losing them. Montag starts getting depressed with life and begins to read his stash of books he stole from fire calls and pulls them out from being hidden inside an air-conditioning vent. Beatty tells Montag to take twenty-four hours or so to see if his stolen books contain anything worthwhile and then turn them in to be burnt. MOntag calls an English professor, Faber, and they decide to contact a printer and begin reproducing books. Beatty got a fire call and makes Montag burn his own house; when he is done, Beatty places him under arrest. Montag turns the flamethrower on Beatty and burns him to ashes. He runs into the forest and finds a group of people just like him who are led by a man named Granger. They hope that they may be of some help to mankind after war that has just been declared. Montag’s role is to memorize the Book of Ecclesiastes. Enemy jets appear in the sky and bomb the city while Montag and his friends try to rebuild a better city.
