Literature Analysis #3

Harry Potter And the Chamber of Secrets
GENERAL
1. Ever since Harry Potter had come home for the summer, the Dursleys had been so mean and hideous that all Harry wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange impish creature who says that if Harry returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.
2. The theme of this book, is that with friends and people who appreciate, they will never let you down and always be there when you find yourself in trouble.
3. The authors tone toward her writing is very passionate. "He exchanged dark look with his wife, Petunia." This quote shows how she wants you to feel the look she is explaining. "What did the Dursleys care if Harry lost his place on the House Quidditch team." By this quote, you can tell that the author wants you to see how some people are unkind. "It was this scar that made Harry so Particularly unusual, even for a wizard." This quote explains how the author really cares about her characters and likes them a lot.
4. "Uncle vernon had been treating him like a bomb that might go off at any moment." This quote is a simile explaining how mean Harry's uncle is (pg. 3). "He missed Hogwarts so much it was like having a constant stomachache." This is also a simile that shows how Harry truly misses his friends and his school (pg. 3). "Back to being treated like a dog that rolled in something smelly." This simile shows how mistreated Harry is ever since his parents past away (pg. 5). "The little creature on the bed had large, bat-like ears and bulging green eyes the size of tennis balls (pg. 12)." This quote is all about imagery and how the creature looked. "Harry Potter speaks not of his triumph over He-Who_Must_Not-Be-Named (pg. 15)." This is an allusion, where the author assumes you know that he who must not be named is a bad person.

CHARACTERIZATION
1. An example of indirect characturization is Harry Potters aunt name Petunia. Just by her name, you can tell she is a sweet person who only wants the best for people. "Gilderoy Lockhart came slowly into view, seated at a table surrounded by large pictures of his own face." This is another example of indirect characterization, because you can already tell he is very self-centered and full of himself, just by the things he has surrounding himself. "They were joined by a curly-haired Hufflepuff boy." This is a direct characterization, because his hair is curly just as stated. "Mr. Weasley flushed darker than either Ron or Ginny." This quote is also direct, because the dad's face is redder then his kids.
2. The authors syntax and diction when she is focusing on a character, is very intense and gives you a sense of suspension of disbelief. When she uses the characters, you fell as though you know them personally and can relate to what they are going through.
3. The protagonist is dynamic and round. When the book started out, he was alone and didn't know how to act, but as the story goes on he changes. By the end, he has many friends and saved his school.
4. After I read the book, I felt like I met a new person completely. "They don't know we're not allowed to use magic at home." Just by this quote, I can tell you that Harry Potter is a very fun and sly boy. I feel as though I know all of his secrets and how he would answer questions.
